Where Is 3I/ATLAS Now?

3I/ATLAS is currently outbound, moving away from the Sun and Earth on a one-way trip back into interstellar space. It reached perihelion — its closest approach to the Sun — on October 29, 2025, and has been retreating ever since, passing beyond the orbit of Mars and, by early 2026, beyond Jupiter’s orbit as well.

3I/ATLAS Trajectory Tracker

3I/ATLAS follows a steep, retrograde hyperbolic path tilted more than 175 degrees relative to the plane of the solar system, which is part of what made astronomers suspicious of its origins within days of its discovery. Its extreme velocity, in excess of 130,000 miles per hour when first spotted, is far too fast for it to have originated anywhere in our own solar system.

Can You Still See 3I/ATLAS?

At this point, 3I/ATLAS has faded well beyond naked-eye or even typical backyard-telescope visibility. Its brightness has been dropping steadily as it moves farther from both the Sun and Earth, and it now sits at a magnitude that requires large observatory-class telescopes to detect. For most of its visible window — roughly the second half of 2025 into early 2026 — it was observable only as a faint smudge even through moderate amateur equipment, and it briefly disappeared from view entirely in mid-2025 as it passed behind the Sun from Earth’s perspective.

3I/ATLAS vs. Oumuamua vs. Borisov

3I/ATLAS is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever detected passing through our solar system, following 1I/’Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Each has been strikingly different. ‘Oumuamua showed no visible coma or tail, sparking years of debate over whether it was a comet, asteroid, or something else entirely — a debate that never fully settled before it became too faint to study further. Borisov, by contrast, was unambiguously a comet, with an active coma and tail and a composition broadly similar to comets native to our own solar system.

3I/ATLAS splits the difference in some ways and stands apart in others: it’s confirmed as an active comet, but its chemistry — including a methane-to-water ratio far higher than anything previously measured in a solar-system object — makes it chemically unlike either of its predecessors, and unlike most comets born around our own Sun.
