Why Hobart is Australia’s Aurora Capital

Hobart is the premier gateway for witnessing the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) in Australia. Located at approximately 42° South, Tasmania’s capital sits closer to the magnetic south pole than any other major Australian city. During the current G4 Solar Storm, Hobart is perfectly positioned to see intense light displays that can be captured even with a smartphone.

Understanding the Southern Kp-Index While the Kp-index is a global measurement, its impact in Hobart is significant. Because of Tasmania’s latitude, a Kp-index of 4 is often enough to capture a beautiful green or pink glow on the horizon with a camera. When the tracker hits Kp 7 or 8, as it has today, the aurora can move directly overhead, creating spectacular “beams” and “curtains” visible to the naked eye.

Best Aurora Viewing Spots in Hobart For the best results, you need an unobstructed view of the southern horizon away from the city’s light pollution. Local aurora hunters recommend:

  • Mount Wellington (Kunayi): The summit provides a massive elevation advantage, placing you above most low-level clouds.
  • South Arm Peninsula: A 40-minute drive from the CBD, offering pitch-black skies over the Southern Ocean.
  • Tinderbox Marine Reserve: A quiet coastal spot with a perfect southern orientation for photographers.

Using the Southern Aurora Oval Map Unlike the Northern Lights, the Southern Aurora Oval is centered over Antarctica. On our live map above, look for the red and green bands moving toward the Australian continent. If the bands reach Tasmania, the show is on! Remember to allow your eyes at least 15 minutes to adjust to the dark for the best experience.
