The Geminid radiant rises by roughly 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. local time for much of the continental US and climbs above 60 degrees by about 2:00 a.m. local time. The strongest window is usually from midnight through dawn on December 14. In 2026, the young Moon sets early or remains low and faint, preserving the dark sky that faint Geminids need.

Do not stare at the radiant in Gemini. Meteors appear shorter near their origin point. Face 40 to 60 degrees away from it, keep the broadest unobstructed section of sky in view, and let your peripheral vision work.

Quadrantids: January 3-4, 2027

For the US, set the alarm for roughly 2:00 a.m. to dawn local time on January 4. Cold is the trade-off. A reclining chair, insulated layers, hand warmers, and a thermos are not luxuries during a January watch. They are what keep a 15-minute check from becoming a two-hour observation session.

Eta Aquariids: May 5-6, 2027

Halley’s Comet built this shower, and its meteors are fast – roughly 148,000 mph, or 66 km/s, when they strike Earth’s atmosphere. The radiant stays low from much of the US, which makes this event heavily location-dependent. Florida, Texas, the Gulf Coast, southern Arizona, and southern California have the edge.

The key window is about 3:30 a.m. until the first brightening of dawn on May 6. At latitude 30 degrees north, the radiant may reach only about 25 to 30 degrees above the eastern horizon before sunrise. At 40 degrees north, it remains lower, reducing the practical rate. But the New Moon makes 2027 unusually favorable, so a clear southern horizon is worth the early wake-up call.

Southern Delta Aquariids: July 29-30, 2027

This is the quieter summer field operation, not the blockbuster. With a predicted ZHR near 20 to 25, the Southern Delta Aquariids reward patient observers away from city glare. Their long, graceful meteor trails are best seen from the southern half of the country, where the radiant reaches a more useful altitude.

Watch between midnight and dawn on July 30. The waning crescent Moon should interfere very little, and warm summer temperatures make this one of the easiest all-night observing sessions of the year. The shower also overlaps with early Perseid activity, so the sky can remain active even when you cannot identify every meteor’s source.

Strong showers with real trade-offs

The Orionids arrive October 21-22, 2026, also carrying debris from Halley’s Comet. They can deliver 20 to 25 meteors per hour, but a waxing gibbous Moon will brighten the early portion of the night. Start after midnight, once the radiant in Orion is high, and prioritize the final dark hours before dawn.
